Resistance to change
Topic: Mindset and culture
Ever wonder why it seems to be so hard to get people to come around to the agile way of working, when the benefits are so obvious and the costs of the old ways are so debilitating?

In an interesting article on the scientific bases for people's natural resistance to change and the resulting effects on project success, Dr. Natalie Petouhoff draws connections between management style, organizational inertia, and the human brain.

The worst thing leaders can do is to lead via the command and control method, such as stating, "The bus is leaving the station. If you are not on it we'll leave you behind." That type of declaration makes the amygdala kick into high gear.

She also notes:

Why People Hate Change

  • It will change who's powerful
  • It will change how people work
  • It will make some feel out of control
  • It's different
  • It's challenging
  • It's demanding
  • t's unproven
  • It's stressful
  • It's irritating
